My Top 10 Books From My Toddler's Bookshelf
Hello friends! As a mama of two, we do a lot of reading around here! Now that my son is 2 1/2 years old, we can finally dig a little deeper into the books that we read together, and discuss what lessons we’ve learned from them! I thought it’d be fun to share my top 10 favorite books from my toddler’s bookshelf, as well as the learning opportunities they each offer! In the event that you’re interested in purchasing one of these books, or want to support my blog, you can CLICK the picture of the book of your choice below it’s title which will direct you to my affiliate link! Then, you can add the item to your cart for purchasing! Thank you all so much for reading and I hope you enjoy!
1. “The Jesus Storybook Bible”
For any fellow mama believers that read my blog, this particular one's for you! There are many children's Bibles out there, but we have heard raves about this one, and it has not disappointed! Although the Bible is complex at times to explain to a toddler, this one does a great job at making it easy to understand! It has beautiful drawings, and countless lessons of God's love, Jesus’ forgiveness, and of serving others!
2. “Goodnight Moon”
Classic read! I love the rhyming scheme of this book! My son loves to shout out the last word of each short sentence which helps him identify the rhyming words! If you’re looking for a great/quick before-bedtime-read for your child as he, or she winds down, this is a great one!
3. “The New Baby”
This book is helpful in the concept of introducing an older sibling to a new baby! It raises and answers questions like, “What does a new baby do?” “How can I play with it?” Ultimately, it shows a positive look at how an older sibling can interact with a new baby, and the pictures are very sweet! If you're looking for more tips on how to prepare your child for a sibling, you can find that in my blog post, here!
4. “Little Blue Truck”
My son and I love to read this book about helping others! It features all sorts of farm animals to learn about, along with the sounds they make! An unkind Dump Truck is featured recklessly zooming past all of the other characters. When he gets stuck and asks for help, noone seems to care…but the Little Blue Truck knows the importance of friends, and chooses to help the Dump Truck out of the mud. Due to the Little Blue Truck’s kind act of service, the Dump Truck has a change of heart, and acknowledges the importance of helping others! The book is definitely “sing-able” in its' wonderful rhyming scheme (Believe me, that's the only way we read it, haha!), and there’s lots of room for a variety of fun voices too!
5. “The Berenstain Bears:Learn About Strangers”
This book was a necessity for us as soon as a stranger put his hand out to give my son a high five across the way in a crowded mall, and my son willingly ran right to him! It was clearly time to teach my son about strangers. Should our kids be terrified of strangers to the point of nightmares? … No! Should our kids be trusting of strangers to the point of endangering themselves? …. No! This book answers these questions, and provides a nice balance for how to approach the idea of strangers using examples from brother and sister bear. It explains that not every stranger is good intentioned, and we still have to be careful with everyone! It also provides some eye-opening guidelines about dealing with strangers that helps facilitate the conversation parents should be having with their kids on stranger awareness.
6. “I Knew You Could! A Book for All the Stops in Your Life”
There are SO many great messages in this book about determination, not being afraid to ask others for help, pushing through hard times, and not giving up, to the point that I’ve actually read this book purely for my own need for encouragement! I love that it acknowledges the different emotions we all go through in life, which are not always “happy.” It has a great rhyming scheme that is so enjoyable to read, and definitely contains messages for my toddler that I can stand behind! I strongly recommend it! Also, if your kid likes trains… #winning.
7. “Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa”
If your child will be staying the night at grandma and grandpa's house, then this is a good book to introduce. Llama Llama has a great relationship with his grandparents, but he unfortunately leaves his special stuffed animal at home! Thankfully, Grandpa shares a similar stuffed animal with him that leaves Llama Llama feeling safe and confident which ultimately saves the day! It's nice to address the emotions your child may feel when he is away from you, but it also leaves room for how to problem solve when experiencing those feelings! If you need to gain confidence leaving your own children in order to have a successful night out, you can read my blog post here!
8. “Lost and Found”
This is a sweet book in regards to befriending others, and helping them not feel alone. A sad looking penguin shows up at a young boy’s door. The boy tries his best to help the little penguin find his home, even going as far as take him to the North Pole! He later learns the penguin wasn’t lost at all…he was just lonely and needed a friend (Hence the “found” in the title)! This book is very cute for prompting conversations about emotions and friendship with your child.
9. “Potty Time with Elmo”
This is a very helpful book to have for when potty training, or for a little refresher of how to use the potty. This is also the book I mentioned in my blog post, "How I Potty Trained My Toddler in a Week!" From using toilet paper, to flushing, to washing hands with soap, to using big boy underwear… this book covers it all!
10. “Stone Soup”
My favorite book thus far on sharing, with lessons like, “We all have something to give/share,” and “Alone, we may have a little, but together we have a lot!” Stone Soup involves two travelers who visit a village where nobody wants to share, or claims they don't have anything to share. After the travelers announce they will create a delicious soup to feed the whole village from a stone and a magical ingredient, everyone is highly intrigued! Suddenly, every person willingly contributes a single food item of the little they have, and through the magic ingredient of sharing, what began as a stone in boiling water becomes an enormous soup with all sorts of vegetables for feasting!! This book also features the RECIPE for your children to replicate this sharing soup with friends!!! Is this not the cutest way to put the lesson of sharing into practice?!
